How to make fish burgers

A question we often get asked is, “Don't you guys get sick of eating 2 minute noodles all the time?” See our FAQs for the full rundown on this but in the meantime we've found if we apply a little brain power...

… we actually get to eat pretty well. The trick is to make up for the lack in household conveniences by utilising the sheer amount of time we have to prepare food (or for that matter the time we have to sit around writing posts about preparing food).

Voila, Exhibit A: How to make fish burgers

Ingredients: fish, flour, alfalfa seeds, beer
Preparation Time: 3-4 days.

Step 1: Choose a piece of fresh fish...

But not too fresh – you don't want to get too emotionally attached to your fish because the next step in the relationship tends to work out badly, at least for the fish.

Step 2: Choose an apprentice kitchen hand.

In this case I chose Jean from the set of available candidates.

Step 3: This is an important step and should only be attempted by a master chef. Go to the fridge and very carefully pull yourself out a beer at the same time reaching for the alfalfa sprouts.

Side note: Your kitchen hand needs to start growing the sprouts from seed three days beforehand.

Step 4: After the kitchen hand has scaled and filleted the fish and cut the squid entree into calamari rings she will need to make bread rolls from scratch. Make sure she kneads the dough into perfectly smooth buns. As you peer over the top of your can of beer you should be able to see little strands of gluten forming on her forehead if she is doing this correctly. It may help to give her a sip of your beer but be careful not to overdo this – more than a dash will inevitably lead to less beer.

Step 5: If you have a wood-fired bread oven then follow the manufacturer's instructions. If you have a single burner camp stove and a fry-pan without a lid then this (surprisingly) will work as well. Make sure in this case you know where the fire extinguisher is stowed if you are using a wooden bread board as part of your makeshift baker's oven.

Step 6: This step is easy and should be delegated the kitchen hand. How else is she going to learn? Chop up cabbage, apple and sultanas with a little bit of mayo to make a coleslaw that would make the Colonel's lips water.

Step 7: Cook the fish in what quite recently was a baker's oven and plate it together with a bit of lemon.

And there you have...

...a fish burger. So easy Jamie Oliver could do it.
